Laguz meaning

Laguz is a water rune. There’s not many fully elemental runes, but Laguz is one of them. The other Laguz meaning is witchcraft, and my Laguz week was truly magical.

There are runes for each element in the Futhark, but for some there’s more than one and you could argue which rune represents the given element more clearly. But for Water it’s a straightforward choice – Laguz is connected with water, sea and streams. It represents all the Water event qualities as well: emotions, intuition, subconscious and hidden powers.

For other elements the connotations are a bit more complicated: Kenaz is certainly a Fire rune, but Sowilo is sun and lightning and is also connected to Fire. I personally feel closer connection to Sowilo but it’s a matter of different Fire aspects you want to use. Ansuz is clearly an Air rune. It represents wind, air and breath. But for the earth it’s harder to select one rune. You can say Inguz, since it’s connected to fertility or Bercana as plants and growth. You can also select Othala rune, as your ancestors land. There can be some more personal connotations, but if you you want to make a runes element circle, Laguz is a must.

Laguz is also very magical rune – it is connected with witchcraft, hidden powers and spiritual plane. As water can come through the smallest holes gently Laguz has the hidden subtle power that at the same time can not be stopped. You can use Laguz to call to your inner powers.

As Laguz often represents emotions it’s a door to our subconscious. Laguz will help you with your most intimate, even hidden wishes, but they need to be truly yours. Laguz can multiply positive emotions but it can also increase emotionality in general and add to instability. Water itself is always moving and never stable, so it helps to adapt and embrace the changes. You can use Laguz to ride the wave or stream in the direction you want, but then you’ll have to rely on the water, trust the current and not fight the wave – ride it and the change would be great.

My Laguz week was the holiday season and I got a magical vacation. Laguz falling on the winter holidays has its meaning too – the Yule nights are magical as is Laguz. The today’s New Years night falls on the end of Yule’s nights season and as a vale between the ‘no one’s time’ after the Yule and the New Year. Water often represents the veil, the border between, and crossing the river is found in lots of myths. Laguz is the river, those days and especially nights in between, that have lots of hidden power.
